Back it up in ten seconds.
Once a month, right after you lock the previous month, make a copy: File → Make a copy. Name it something like "IMM Backup — [month]." Everything carries over — your data, your locked months, all of it. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy: ten seconds against ever losing your progress.
Lock at the start of the month, not the end.
When a new month begins, your first move is to hit Lock Previous Month on the Analytics tab — before you enter anything new. That snapshots last month as your comparison baseline. Think of it as closing the books on the month that just ended so the new one starts clean. Miss it and you just lose that month's comparison, nothing breaks — but the habit is what makes the month-over-month view worth having.
Don't chase small, old expenses.
Forgot to log something from a while back? Simple rule: if it's $100 or more, or from the last 30 days, add it. Under $100 and older than that — let it go. Perfect records aren't the goal; a clear enough picture to make good decisions is. Chasing every stray $6 charge costs you more momentum than it buys you in accuracy.
Start with estimates. Refine later.
You don't need every exact balance and rate to begin. Put in your best guesses and the tool works immediately — then tighten the numbers as you pull statements. An honest rough picture today beats a perfect one you never finish. Getting started is the win; precision comes with time.
